In this year, there were 78 freshmen coming to our college. 74 freshmen among them majored in Chinese literature. The rest came to our college by taking part in Strengthening Plan.
The counselor, the freshman head teacher and volunteers, who all were from Faculty of Humanities, waited early for freshmen in Einstein Square. The moment freshmen reached the welcome stall, they attained warm reception and went through all procedures smoothly. In this year, in addition to “Freshman Gift Packs” that were presented by our university, the Faculty of Humanities also prepared a special gift. It was a lecture collection of “Spring and Autumn Lecture Series” activities, which calledDesolation and Poetry-in Autumn, 2016, by Chi Zijian and Dai Huajin. The reason why freshmen gained this gift was that our faculty hoped they read more and think more at the start, learn from good writers, establish humanistic ideals and cultivate humanistic feelings.
At half past ten in the morning, Shao Xinyu, secretary of the Party Committee of our university, and Liang Qian, vice president of our university, came to the dormitory of Student 314, Faculty of Humanities, Building 22 of Yunyuan. They had a cordial talk with the students, encouraged them to pay attention to study and stressed that "Only by pursuing truth scientifically, pursuing virtue humanistically and combining truth and virtue can we create beauty.". During the epidemic, Secretary Shao said that the combination of liberal arts and public health majors played an important role, humanities and social sciences workers provided many constructive suggestions. Students should work hard to learn professional knowledge and take full advantage of their academic to contribute to society. Wuhan was a heroic city. Huazhong University has also played a huge role in the epidemic. Vice President Liang took this opportunity to encourage new students to learn skills well and pursue excellence.
Muredili Mai Mai Timing, who was a Uyghur student from Hetian, Xinjiang province, graduated from the inner high class of Wuhan Hantie High School. When Secretary Shao shook hands with him, Mr.Shao asked him whether he could adapt to the campus life and whether he had difficulties in life. Mr.Shao hoped that he could develop himself in an all-round way in Huazhong University.
In the end, Secretary Shao and Vice President Liang presented books to the students with their own hands and encouraged students to read more and think more.
At 7 PM, Party secretary Liu Chanjuan, Deputy Party Vice secretary Ye Zhi, Vice Dean Lu Chengwen and counselors Song Haipei and Chang Wenya came to the freshmen dormitories to visit the freshmen and have a friendly talk with the parents. Teachers cordially asked freshmen whether they would adapt to the environment in Wuhan and introduced all aspects of their study and life in school to freshmen and parents.
On behalf of the Party Committee and administration of the Faculty of Humanities, Secretary Liu Chanjuan warmly welcome to all the freshmen and their parents. She also expressed her heartfelt thanks to the parents for their careful cultivation and excellent students. In the communication, she did a brief introduction about our talent training mode and platform, which were that humanities college grasped the concept of fostering character and civic virtue, through diversified personnel training ways, such as inviting the domestic first-line writers to give lectures , organizing more undergraduate students to participate in overseas exchange communication etc., has provided a broad space and a platform for the growth of the students. Secretary Liu also combined with the school motto of " Moral and knowledgeable, realistic and innovative" and "Dare to compete, good at transformation" concept of development to encourage the students to firm belief, orient, forge ahead with determination，take on heavy responsibilities and strive to become academic explorers that respect knowledge, clear right ways, seek the truth and innovate actively, become communication facilitators between Chinese culture and global civilization, become leaders who practice the spirit and wisdom of China, become responders who possess humanistic care and patriotism and become history makers who have a thorough knowledge of both western and traditional Chinese, set up the virtue and practice earnestly in Huazhong University.
Ye Zhi, vice deputy secretary of the Party Committee, mainly talked with freshmen and parents about student work and daily safety. He briefly introduced the characteristics of the college's student work and encouraged undergraduate freshmen to actively participate in various activities of the college based on their own interests and hobbies and future development direction. Under the concept of diversified education, the undergraduate students would realize characteristic development and improve their comprehensive quality and individual ability. In addition, Secretary Ye also stressed that the epidemic prevention work must be firmly held. Although Wuhan was currently the safest city, we still could not take it lightly. New students should actively cooperate with the school epidemic prevention work to ensure their health and safety. What's more, personal and property safety should also be emphasized. Both students and parents should be aware of telecommunication fraud and other cheating routines and improve their safety awareness. Faced with endless frauds, students should help avoid their parents being cheated while they are on own guard.
In terms of professional learning, Vice Dean Lu Chengwen patiently answered freshmen' and parents' questions in academic study and also explained the college's curriculum contents, training requirements and other aspects. He encouraged the freshmen to strengthen the ability of independent study and lay a good foundation for literature. He also introduced the curriculum and cultivation of Strengthening Plan in particular, so that the freshmen could understand the down-to-earth connotation under the lofty name of Qiangji Program.
After entering Huazhong University, the class of 2020 opened a new world. At the foot of Yujiashan, the four seasons flow with plants and trees flourishing and withering. The beauty of humanity lies in the green leaves, green lotus and good trees. In the following days, we should be firm in our ideals, clear in our directions, share nice poems and books, draw a blueprint for life and, greet a broader world hand in hand.
