Notification for the 5th Chinese Cultural Summer Camp

    1. The Introduction of HUST

Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) is a national key university directly affiliated to the Ministry of Education of China. On May 26, 2000, the former Huazhong Institute of Technology merged with Tongji Medical University (founded in 1907) and Wuhan Urban Construction Institute (founded in 1952), to form the new Huazhong University of Science and Technology as it is known today. HUST is one of the members of Project 985 and Project 211 and among the first batch of national "Double First-Class" universities. HUST offers a comprehensive and well-structured academic system, encompassing 11 major disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, natural sciences, engineering, medicine, management, arts and interdisciplinary studies. This framework solidifies its status as a comprehensive, research-oriented institution.

Adhering to an open education philosophy, HUST actively promotes global engagement through multi-level international collaborations. To date, it has established partnerships with over 300 universities and institutions across 41 countries and regions. Notably, the School of Engineering Science is among China’s first four international model schools, while the Sino-European Institute for Clean and Renewable Energy has been recognized as one of the 40 exemplary projects commemorating the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the EU.

    2. The Introduction to the School of Humanities

The School of Humanities traces its origins to the Chinese Language Research Institute and other academic institutions founded in 1980 by the renowned linguist Professor Yan Xuequn at the former Huazhong Institute of Technology. It pioneered the integration of liberal arts into a leading science and engineering university in China.

The school currently offers three undergraduate majors (tracks): Chinese Language and Literature (Paleography Track), Chinese Language and Literature (National First-Class Major), and International Chinese Language Education (Provincial First-Class Major). It has been granted the authority to confer master’s and doctoral degrees in Chinese Language and Literature, as well as a postdoctoral research station. Additionally, it has established master’s and doctoral programs in International Chinese Education.

The school boasts a well-structured academic team, consisting of 34 full-time faculty members (excluding postdoctoral researchers), including 12 professors, 13 associate professors, and 9 lecturers, all holding doctoral degrees from prestigious universities. Among them are 1 Yangtze River Scholar Distinguished Professor, 1 National Leading Talent of the Ten-Thousand Talents Plan, 1 National Cultural Master and Four Batches Talent (Theoretical Field), 1 National Outstanding Young and Middle-Aged Expert, and 1 member of the National Teaching Advisory Committee for Master’s Degrees in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language.

The school is home to several academic institutions, including the Chinese Language Research Institute, History Research Institute, Academy of Chinese Classics, Center for Contemporary Chinese Writing Studies, New Media Language and Culture Communication Research Center, and New Humanities Research Center. It also hosts the National Language Promotion Base (HUST), which is supported by the School of Humanities.

The school actively promotes internationalization, aligning with the university’s global development strategy. It invites renowned scholars from home and abroad to teach and lecture, organizes high-level academic events such as the "HUST Language Forum" and the "HUST-NUS Academic Lecture Series", and fosters a vibrant international academic atmosphere. Students are encouraged to participate in "Belt and Road" themed social practices in countries like Tunisia, Malaysia, and Vietnam, as well as exchange programs at prestigious overseas institutions such as the University of Oxford and the University of California, Berkeley. The school has also sent outstanding faculty members to teach at Confucius Institutes in New Zealand (University of Canterbury), Brazil (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais), and Thailand.

Currently, the school hosts over 40 international students from more than 10 countries and regions, including Russia, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam. It offers a range of compulsory and elective courses in Chinese Language and Literature, International Chinese Education, Chinese Culture and History, cultivating a large number of international students who are knowledgeable about and friendly toward China. The school’s international reputation and influence continue to grow.

    3. Program Schedule

Building on the success of its previous four editions, the School of Humanities at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) will host the 5th Chinese Culture Summer Camp this July. The camp aims to provide students from around the world with an opportunity to understand China’s fundamentals, explore its rich traditional culture, and witness outstanding achievements in innovation and entrepreneurship. Participants will immerse themselves in the profound influence of 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, drawing inspiration from its depth and wisdom. Through cross-cultural learning that bridges the East and West, the camp seeks to foster greater innovative capabilities and showcase a more confident, open, and globally integrated China.

In addition, the camp will feature the "International Youth Student Development Forum", designed to help young participants understand contemporary developments, grasp the essence of "Modern China", and comprehend the vision of a "Community with a Shared Future for Mankind" and the principles of collaborative development. The forum will provide constructive, practical, and comprehensive guidance, empowering youth to take on the responsibility of contributing to global development, hone their skills to meet global challenges, and unite their collective wisdom to drive progress for humanity.
